Return to What Do Engineers Do?

Chemical Engineers

Chemical engineers apply the principles of chemistry, mathematics and physics to solve problems involving the production of useful products from chemicals or raw materials.  They work in a variety of fields other than chemical manufacturing. Other industries would include paper, food, electronics, energy, cosmetics and clothing.  Chemical engineers develop:

  • Petroleum products,
  • Pharmaceuticals,
  • Nanomaterials,
  • Polymerization,
  • Computer chips,
  • Plastics,
  • High performance materials,
  • Manufacturing test methods,
  • Methods of energy production,
  • Recovery of useable materials from waste,
  • Safe medicine production methods,
